Immigration, Asylum and Human Rights
Selva Navaratnarajah joined Wimbledon Solicitors in May 2013 and has built a long career with the firm in complex immigration, asylum and human rights work.
She has been an accredited Senior Caseworker under the Law Society Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme since 2013, and a Supervising Senior Caseworker since 2015. Over more than a decade in practice she has worked on cases involving persecution, human rights violations, political opinion, sexual orientation, gender identity, family and private life, and other grounds for international protection.
Selva prepares and manages complex asylum and human rights claims and represents clients before the Home Office and in the Immigration and Asylum Chambers of the First-tier Tribunal and the Upper Tribunal. Her work often turns on a careful assessment of credibility, country conditions, documentary evidence and the individual circumstances of the person making the claim.

Claims engaging family and private life and other human rights grounds, including cases raising serious human rights violations.
Tribunal representation
Representation before the Home Office and in the Immigration and Asylum Chambers of the First-tier Tribunal and the Upper Tribunal.
Complex immigration casework

Supervision of casework
Oversight and guidance on complex cases, supporting colleagues in developing legal strategy and preparing matters to a high standard.
Selva's particular specialism is the representation of LGBT clients and of political asylum seekers from African countries. She has developed specific expertise in cases involving LGBT clients from Uganda, Kenya and Ghana, and in cases brought by Oromo asylum seekers from Ethiopia.
That work depends on understanding the social, political and cultural circumstances behind a claim, and on recognising the particular evidential and legal difficulties these cases can present. Selva has worked with the country evidence, expert material and personal testimony that such claims usually require.
Selva is committed to assisting people who face persecution, discrimination or serious human rights violations because of who they are, what they believe, or how their political activity is perceived.
She recognises that these cases are sensitive and often deeply personal, and she takes a thorough and considered approach to each one. Her aim is to provide clear and strategic representation while making sure that each client's individual circumstances are properly understood.
These are some of the milestones along the way.
Selva graduated with an LLB (Hons) from the University of Westminster, achieving a 2:1.
Selva completed the Bar Professional Training Course.
Selva joined the firm in May 2013 and became an accredited Senior Caseworker under the Law Society Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme in the same year.
Selva was accredited as a Supervising Senior Caseworker, taking on oversight of complex casework and support for colleagues across the immigration team.
You start with a short initial phone call, up to five minutes, so that the firm can understand your situation and confirm whether it is able to help. This call is not legal advice.
Selva sets out your options and the likely next steps, and explains how your matter would be funded, including whether legal aid may be available for that type of case.
Your account, supporting documents and country evidence are prepared with care, and you are told what each piece of evidence is for and how it will be used.
Selva represents you before the Home Office and, where your case goes further, at the tribunal, and explains what each decision means for you.
Selva works on complex asylum, human rights and immigration cases, including claims based on persecution, political opinion, sexual orientation, gender identity, and family and private life. She also supervises colleagues on complex casework.
Selva joined Wimbledon Solicitors in May 2013 and has worked in immigration, asylum and human rights law throughout that time. She has been accredited under the Law Society Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme since 2013, and at supervising level since 2015.
The Law Society Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme is the recognised quality standard for advisers working on immigration and asylum matters. Supervising Senior Caseworker is a senior stage within that scheme. Alongside her own casework, Selva provides oversight and guidance to colleagues on complex cases.
The first step is a short phone call, up to five minutes, so the firm can confirm whether it is able to help. If it can, you are offered a paid eligibility assessment of sixty minutes, where your situation is looked at properly and you are told what your options are and how the matter would be funded.
Selva is based at our head office at 191 Merton Road, South Wimbledon, London SW19 1EE. You are welcome to call 020 8543 3302 to arrange a callback or an appointment at a time that suits you.
